Ana has trained most of her life to achieve one goal: to prove that anything men can do, she can do better. Now she’s Sector One’s first female Rider, and being the best is the only way to ensure she won’t be its last. Distractions aren’t allowed–especially not her painful attraction to the reserved but demanding leader whose stern, grumpy demeanor has already gotten into her head.

Deacon has spent the last twenty years trying to atone for his past, but the blood he spilled as a mercenary and assassin will never wash away entirely. If his Riders knew the extent of his sins, he’d lose their trust and respect. It’s easier to keep them all at arm’s length, especially Ana. But his newest recruit’s stubbornness is starting to crack his defenses.

And their sparring matches are driving him wild.

The passion sparking between them can’t be denied, but neither can the vengeance barreling toward Deacon. When his old squad comes back to punish him for his betrayal, Ana and the Riders are squarely in the line of fire. The only way to save his people may be to make the ultimate sacrifice.

But first, he has to convince Ana not to follow him straight into hell.

What I thought about Deacon

Deacon is the second book in the Gideon's Riders series based in the same world as the popular Beyond series by the same author, in a time period after the war that liberated the sectors from Eden.  There's still plenty of action to be had and lots of problems still brewing in the sectors.

Deacon is one of Gideon's riders, holy roller bikers patrolling the sectors, taking down the trouble makers and bullies.  He's a trainer of sorts for the other riders and has a past he'd sooner forget, but the folks he used to work with aren't going to let him do that.

Ana is the first female rider.  Let me say that again. The first female rider. As the first, she's got a lot on her shoulders.  Not only does she have to prove that she's worthy -- she has to pave the way for other females to have the opportunity.  That's a heavy load that she happens to carry very well. The only thing in her way is Deacon and the feelings she has for him. Loving him will only make both of them look weak, so she holds back her feelings until she can't do it anymore.

There's plenty of action in this book, but I have to say I really do like the more romantic feel of this series.  It's all about the HEA, and Ana and Deacon's path to happiness is full of detours and roadblocks, but eventually they get there.

I really do like this series.  Kit Rocha knows how to write great action sequences which I love, and then there's the steamy scenes between the main characters that always entertain.

A great addition to this series, especially Ana's contributions to Gideon's Riders and her reconciliation with her feelings for Deacon and being strong enough to be one of the Gideon's Riders.  Loved that part the most.

An ARC was provided for review.
